The Aviation Art of Tom Kalina
This page is dedicated to the breathtaking aviation art of Midway Historian Tom Kalina, who is also captain at SC Johnson in Racine, Wisconsin. Tom's paintings depict the romance, allure and call of the sky to the air traveler, and the glory of the piston airliner era that also made the Midway Airport of the 20th Century what it was. Tom's amazing work takes you right into the Jet Age with artwork that can only be supplanted by the real thing. It's artwork you have to see to believe.
The lighting, moods, detail, accuracy and beauty of each composition, coupled with giant hurtling ships flying among the clouds, make each of Tom's paintings a masterpiece.

In the 1950s, the fortunate air traveler got to fly in the Douglas DC-7 or one of TWA's beautiful Lockheed Super-G Constellations. A trip like the one depicted above must have been in the wish list of many a postwar air traveler, as the romance of the skies beckoned more than ever.

About The Artist
Tom began flying at age sixteen in 1965 before he even had a driver’s license! After graduating from college , he began his professional flying career as an Air Mail pilot. In the years that followed, he advanced his aviation career through the yanks of cargo, airline and corporate, and is currently piloting the Dassault Falcon 7X and 8X all over the world.
Before there was flying, however, there was art. Tom began drawing and painting while in grade school and displayed remarkable talent to his teachers. Although many teachers persuaded him to make art his profession, Tom followed his heart to be a pilot, while maintaining his art as a method to record his passion for flight. Tom is also well known as an accomplished model airplane builder, having won numerous awards for these miniature works of art. It is oil painting, however, that Tom finds the most satisfaction for his creative process. Basically self-taught and inspired by aviation artists such as Frank Wooton, R.G. Smith, William Phillips and Craig Kodera, Tom brings to the canvas his many years of flying experience to create scenes that capture the realities of aircraft and the beauty of their realm.
